Thanks Remco.

I downloaded the v0.93_unofficial, deleted the administrator>components>com_feedgator and components>com_feedgator directories, then in mySQL deleted mos_feedgator and mos_feedgator_config (yes, this installation is an upgraded Mambo).

I tried the install and got this error:
SQL Error DB function failed with error number 1064
You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'ON duplicate KEY UPDATE value='0.8.C42.a'' at line 1 SQL=INSERT INTO `mos_feedgator_config` (`id`, `name`, `value`, `extra`) VALUES ('', 'current_version', '0.93_unofficial', '')ON duplicate KEY UPDATE value='0.8.C42.a';
SQL =

INSERT INTO `mos_feedgator_config` (`id`, `name`, `value`, `extra`) VALUES ('', 'current_version', '0.93_unofficial', '')ON duplicate KEY UPDATE value='0.8.C42.a';

Did I do something wrong?

Also, I had a JoomlaExplorer 1.5.1 and upgraded it to 1.6.1 per your suggestion. Thanks for the tip. However, I can change the permissions but not the ownership of the directory, so it's hard for me to delete those two directories. Am I missing something with that?

Very important component. Glad you guys are working on it.

Hi J.R. and J.P.,

Grr.. second time I type this message, my login time expired before I posted my message. Anyway, glad I can be of any assistance here.

(yes, this installation is an upgraded Mambo).

I have to admit that I'm not familiar with Mambo, I only know a little bit about Joomla.

.. error number 1064... error in your SQL syntax

Looks like a problem with MySQL. Which version of MySQL are you running?
I have to admit that the syntax is not well written, there is a space missing (right before ON) and I'm not sure the ON duplicate KEY works in MySQL v3 versions.
I created a new version 0.93a_unofficial, only for new installations, and attached it to this email. I see the server renamed it to com_feedgator0.zip but it's there. Can you install that one? Make sure you completely remove the old 0.93 version first, including the MySQL tables.

Did I do something wrong?

No, I don't think so.

..I can change the permissions but not the ownership of the directory, so it's hard for me to delete those two directories. Am I missing something with that?

That makes sense to me. If you FTP'd the files You are the owner. If you installed them through Joomla chances are that the webserver (Apache?) is the owner. But it seems to me that if you can install files and directories that you can also delete them. Either with FTP (when You are the owner) or JoomlaXplorer (when Apache is the owner).

Do you have a shell (ssh) at your disposal? If so you could try deleting them with the rm command. Or perhaps with 'sudo rm *' or something to that extend. This latter command *should not* work but you never know. If it does you might want to lookout for a hosting provider that understands his business

Hope that helps,

Remco

Excellent. I installed 0.93 and this seems to work perfectly now. Seems very stable. Thank you so much. This is a very beautiful extension.

Can I ask about metatags?
I have never been able to make those work automatically on my site. It seems like such a small thing but whether I use the yahoo id they gave or the developer key the only data that is extracted is "Term extraction failed" in the keywords which is rather counterproductive. Any tips that you could post that would help that work?

I have not set up CRON jobs on feedgator yet because it seemed so unstable at v0.4..., and even 0.7, but this 0.93 is very nice. In the absence of a manual for this extension, could you post anything about CRON jobs with this or is it very straight forward?

Also, your suggestions about JoomlaExplorer worked perfectly. My server admin guy across town will be happy too because I can stop asking him to delete files.

Just to keep the record straight, actually, the site was upgraded from Mambo 4.5.2 to Joomla 1.0.12 a couple months ago by Phil Taylor. The 'mos' prefix (rather that jos) is a left-over from the Mambo.

Again, Thanks so much to both of you for your work on the important Feedgator/Syndigator extension, which gives mashup sites like mine so much power.

Hello J.R. and J.P.,

Glad that I could be of assistance. I love the open source concept. One of the main ideas behind open source is that everybody can improve it. But that is only good if they share it with the community, just as it was intended with open source software.

I ran into a couple of problems just like you guys and was able to solve a few of them. Seems only fair that I share my modifications because I benefit from this great open source project as well. That's how it works. So you're welcome

Can I ask about metatags?

I wouldn't know, I've never had the desire to switch that function on in the feedgator configuration. Do you have an example feed that I could use to take a look at it?

I have not set up CRON jobs on feedgator yet because it seemed so unstable at v0.4..., and even 0.7, but this 0.93 is very nice. In the absence of a manual for this extension, could you post anything about CRON jobs with this or is it very straight forward?

Cron is a scheduler program that runs on -ux webservers. The scheduled jobs are place in a table (crontab). I had some issues with that as well because my ISP doesn't allow me to place jobs directly in the table.
In stead they allow access to cron through a control panel. I created an extra file to deal with that, you can read about the solution and see some screenshots on the Phlooid forum.

Also, your suggestions about JoomlaExplorer worked perfectly.

Yes, that works like a charm. I can't imagine my Joomla life without it One tip though; I prefer to use FTP whenever possible. It allows more flexibility because You are the owner.

For example when you upload pictures/mosimages for use in articles (/images/stories/..) I always use FTP rather then JoomlaXplorer.

Just to keep the record straight, actually, the site was upgraded from Mambo 4.5.2 to Joomla 1.0.12 a couple months ago by Phil Taylor. The 'mos' prefix (rather that jos) is a left-over from the Mambo.

Well, the prefix isn't important in this case. Did you also check the MySQL verion?

Oh and before I forget, Joomla just released version 1.0.13 this week.

Hi Remco,

From the Joomla system info, the db is v3.23.58.

Glad you caused me to check the meta tags. With v0.93a it's now extracting keywords, but in this form:
eagle+nest%2c+nm+-+the+summer+rains%2c+though+welcome+in+most+parts+of+new+m
But about 5 times longer.
I don't think that's a good idea so I'll be shutting that off, too, unless I can find an admin control that will handle that.

However the ultimate idea of this component as an 'engine' is so hip. It can link, tag, brand, and present info content automatically. That will be so possible one day. There are some very good well formatted RSS feeds out there, and this seems like a huge solution to automated independent content delivery.

I'm going to try this v0.93a on three of my other Joomla sites that were using v.04.

The Cronjob post is great info, but there is no link to the files, just a tech reference to the files. Can you post the link for cronpanel.feedgator.zip here? I'd like to try it out. I think I'll have to just let my friend at the ISP do it, tho', unless he sets me up to use the panel.

I'll start leaning on JoomlaExplorer, now, and will try the ftp.

Thanks for the tip on Joomla 1.0.13. And again, I really appreciate the Feedgator v0.93a.

Regards,
J. R.

Hi J.R.,

From the Joomla system info, the db is v3.23.58.

That figures. It is an old version actually. A frequently used version of MySQL is 4.x and some pioneer ISP's even implemented v5.x (latest version is 5.2.3, see php.net)
Two weeks ago php.net even announced that they will stop supporting version 4 at the end of this year. Bottom line, your ISP is using an outdated version. If you use more complicated queries you might run into other problems.

Glad you caused me to check the meta tags .. I'll be shutting that off, too, unless I can find an admin control that will handle that.

It shouldn't be long before the first version of Syndigator is released. Same idea but code is overhauled. It will support unicode and it should take care of a lot of other problems. With a little luck the metatags issue will be resolved then as well.

The Cronjob post is great info, but there is no link to the files, just a tech reference to the files. Can you post the link for cronpanel.feedgator.zip here?

The zip file is only used to wrap up the file cronpanel.feedgator.php which is already available in version 0.93a so you don't need that zip file.

I'd like to try it out. I think I'll have to just let my friend at the ISP do it, tho', unless he sets me up to use the panel.

Not all ISP's provide cron but if they do it's just a matter of finding out how they make it available. If they give you command line access (shell) you can simply look up the proper commands. If they provide you with a panel, as does my ISP, you can use the solution I added.

JP is also familiar with cron (see the articles/posts here on joomlaprodigy.com) so if needed you could ask him for some help to.

Regards,

Remco
